Background

This music is based on and inspired by field recordings made while traveling through the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland, Australia in 2006.
An early version of the music was initially composed and performed live at the Transylvania Calling Festival, Romania, in August 2009, where a soundboard recording was made.
A completely different version was composed and performed in the Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Ireland in September 2009.
A third version was then composed as the starting point for this album.
The completed work synthesises all three live and studio versions of the music, a year’s work that evolved slowly into a finished piece.
'Noosa Sunrise' joins 'Bibbulmun' and 'Nullarbor' as the third album in the Australian series.

The music

01) Noosa National Park (09:37)

The field recordings were made in Noosa National Park close to sunset. The music is inspired by those recordings.

02) Breakfast in Paradise (11:16)

Field recordings were made on a hill overlooking the Sunshine Coast area of South East Queensland. Music results from this. There are vague sounds of us having breakfast with friends in the background.

03) Noosa Sunrise (12:35)

The music is sunrise at Noosa. The light was wonderful and the music picks up as the sun climbs into the morning sky to begin another glorious day.

04) Rain Forest Aviary (07:52)

Field recordings were made at Australia Zoo in the Rain Forest Aviary. Occasionally you can hear a gate closing, that's the sound of people entering and leaving the aviary. The music is inspired by the place and moves towards a point that largely concerns it's founder.

05) Eumundi Markets (04:48)

Ah, Eumundi Markets *sighs*. Field recordings made while strolling through the markets and music inspired by the magic.

06) Alexandra Bay Track (13:12)

In many ways this is a continuation of the first track 'Noosa National Park' in that the field recordings were made on the same evening at the end of the track where it reaches the water at Alexandra Bay. It was almost dark at this stage and the sounds are starting to become night. The music is inspired by the place. It also allowed me to explore a slightly more techno approach to the piece, just for the fun of it. It ends with the closing of a garage door belonging to a dear friend in who's house we were invited to stay.

Technical

The field recordings were all completed on a Sony minidisc with Sony microphones.

Once back in the studio an initial set of recordings were made using Soundforge & Audacity to edit the field sounds. These were later developed into full scale recordings for live performance using Ableton Live. I performed the music as mentioned earlier in Transylvania and did a soundboard recording, wrote a new version and performed it at the Sirius Gallery, Cobh, Ireland and then wrote a third version of the music in studio. The results of all three versions of the music were synthesised together to form a new fourth version of the music which was then mixed and mastered. Along the way I used:

Keyboards: various m-audio controllers
Programming Software: Ableton Live 8 & Reaper
